Sarre, Friedrich / Herzfeld, Ernst. Archäologische Reise im Euphrat- und Tigris-Gebiet.

Berlin, Reimer, 1911-1920.

Folio (285 x 405 mm). 4 vols. X, (1), 252; XII, 395, (1); XI; VII, (1), 59, (1) pp. With 146 plates (vol. III and IV), numerous illustrations in the text and 3 maps (one of them consisting of two sheets).

First edition.

In 1907/08 the archaeologists Friedrich Sarre (1865-1945) and Ernst Herzfeld (1879-1948) journeyed to Mesopotamia to evaluate Islamic sites for possible excavation; their reports are published in this work. The expedition led to the Samarra excavations of 1911-13, which were interrupted by the advent of World War I.

The maps show Baghdad and its surroundings, Mosul and the route of the expedition.

Binding of volume III rather rubbed and bumped, otherwise in good condition.

Rare; the last copy on the market appeared at an auction in 1982.
