Rare dissertation by Goethe's father, a legal treatise on the law inheritance according to Roman and German law. The poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe was very proud of his father's thesis and praises it in his autobiography. Johann Caspar Goethe had studied law in Gießen for four years before continuing his education in Leipzig, then serving at the Wetzlar superior court and earning his doctorate in Gießen with the present dissertation. The poet Goethe would later follow in his father's footsteps and closely repeat his education.

Some browning near the beginning, otherwise a very clean and crisp copy of this very rare work. Provenance: from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015).
