First complete, definitive edition of this literary history, first published in 1698 in a single volume. An exceptionally fine copy. (Gamba). Front pastedowns show engr. heraldic bookplate of Stuart of Dunnairn from Fifeshire (c. 1780). Inscribed to the writer and translator Catherine Mary Phillimore (d. 1929), who is known for her studies on Dante and Fra Angelico ("from her affectionate Aunt Jane M. Vaughn Williams", dated 21 August 1888).

Splendid, perfectly preserved calf bindings; interior slightly brownstained as usual.
