Unique drawings of military formations

[China - Imperial Workshop]. Album showing Chinese military formations ["Five Stars and... the Crescent"]. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850. Folio (565 x 300 mm). With 9 large double-page hand-painted illustrations. Fan fold binding, crimson silk-covered wooden boards with the manuscript title (gilding faded) on front cover.

EUR 85,000.00

Unique manuscript album in accordion format showing Chinese military formations and drills. "Five Stars and the Crescent" (moon) may refer to a constellation or pattern of stars imitated by a military manoeuvre. The album was produced by court artists of the Imperial Workshop during a time when the Chinese army was facing rapid decline, both in terms of discipline and in terms of competing with Western military techniques. Early during the Taiping Rebellion, Qing forces suffered a series of disastrous defeats culminating in the loss of the regional capital city of Nanjing in 1853. Shortly thereafter, a Taiping expeditionary force penetrated as far north as the suburbs of Tianjin in what was considered the Imperial heartlands. In desperation the Qing court ordered a Chinese mandarin, Zeng Guofan, to organise regional and village militias into a standing army called 'tuanlian' to contain the rebellion. Zeng Guofan's strategy was to rely on local gentries to raise a new type of military organisation from those provinces directly threatened by the Taiping rebels. This force, called the "Xiang Army", was a hybrid of local militia and standing army. In 1860 British and French forces in the Second Opium War captured Beijing and sacked the Summer Palace. The shaken court sought to modernise its military and industrial institutions by buying European technology. - The hand-written brush pen text for each illustration runs vertically to the top right side of each page as follows: "Drum is played on the general's stage and the bugle calls for the standing in line. Each captain of the five posts sees to the straightness of the line. Rules of the running array are followed. No one should talk and all should listen to the order. The line leader leads the mandarin-duck formation and then changes to a straight line". - Some wear to silk and boards, as commensurate with age. Minor repairs. Overall in very good condition. {BN#45553}

They show sketches of a Refiner & Silver Furnace at Canton, a section of a Chinese furnace to refine the dross of tin or lead and a section of a Chinese lime Kiln and its wind fan. - Bookplate of the Society for Promoting Arts and Commerce (Royal Society of Arts) on front pastedown. [Chinese school]. A suite of ten erotic paintings. [China, Qing Dynasty, mid-19th century]. [China, Qing Dynasty, mid-19th century]. A suite of 10 erotic scenes, watercolour and gouache on pith paper. Ca. 300 x 190 mm, within silk ribbons, individually matted, framed and glazed (415 x 315 mm). Stored in two custom-made morocco-backed clamshell cases with gilt spines.

EUR 35,000.00

A collection of paintings depicting pornographic scenes of - frequently acrobatic - intercourse (one, a threesome; another involving a "wheelbarrow" game; yet another showing a sex act performed while a baby is sucking the woman's breast). An intriguing and rare example, likely intended for Western consumption. The imaginative erotic scenes are painted on pith paper, or "rice paper", which came from the inner pith of the tree Trexapanx Papyrifera (in Chinese "Tongacao"). Pith paper was introduced in the workshops of Canton in the early 19th century on the instigation of Westerners: its soft, velvety surface was an excellent base for painting in the western way. Erotic pith paper albums were usually of rather low quality, but the present suite, with its rich colours and softly rendered figures, is a fine exception. - Paper sometimes cracked, occasional loss of pigment. A fine collection. {BN#45962}

[Chinese school]. Album of 8 paintings on pith paper showing... stages of tea production. N. p., 19th century. N. p., 19th century. 8 watercolours (ca. 230 x 350 mm) on pith paper mounted on album pages with silk ribbon. Bound in silk-covered boards. Oblong folio.

EUR 4,500.00

The vivid images depict stages in the Chinese production process for tea, from preparing the ground for planting to packing tea chests for export. These images were produced in large numbers in the port of Canton, China during the second and third quarters of the 19th century. Made primarily for the export trade, they are mostly the work of anonymous artists. Although they may resemble enamel paintings, they are actually watercolours on pith paper. Pith is not manufactured, but derived by cutting the inner spongy tissue of a small tree, Tetrapanax papyriferum, which is indigenous to southern China and Taiwan. Most pith paper watercolours, like these examples, are unsigned, though the majority are known to have been produced in Canton where numerous workshops existed. Individual images were often pasted into 19th and early 20th century Australian scrap albums, but it was common to buy the images in sets of 11 or 12, bound into albums with silk brocade covers. The pith paper was supplied held in place on a backing sheet and usually surrounded by a silk or paper ribbon. - With stamp of the "Pakhuismeesteren van de thee Amsterdam" on front flyleaf. Boards chipped and frayed with some loss to silk covers. Some paintings with some minor cracking. {BN#45811}

Dinkel, Josef. Neueste Wagen nach deutscher, französischer, und englischer Bauart.... Augsburg, Vincenz Zanna & Comp., [1845-1850]. Augsburg, Vincenz Zanna & Comp., [1845-1850]. 1 f. of dedication, 100 lithogr. plates in splendid original colour raised in silver and gold. Stored loosely in 8 original wrappers as issued. Small oblong 4to (245 x 150 mm). Half calf portfolio with giltstamped title to spine.

EUR 35,000.00

Complete set of pattern books for coaches; the most beautiful and comprehensive series of its kind ever published. The personal copy of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, to whom the work was dedicated. Exceedingly rare; only three complete copies are known in libraries and collections worldwide (the copy in the Bavarian State Library is incomplete, containing fascicules I-IV only). The magnificent work by the Munich draughtsman contains one hundred designs for sophisticated state coaches and everyday vehicles. The plates, beautifully coloured and many of them heightened in gold and silver, show open and closed coaches with two or four wheels, transport carriages, omnibuses, company cars, sleighs, railway carriages and a hearse; the plate printed in gold shows a sample of a monogram for coachmen's blankets or coach doors. - "Neueste Wagen" was most probably commissioned by Vinzenz Zanna & Comp. - publishers in Augsburg specialized in the distribution of maps since 1833 - and it is assumed that the careful hand-colouring of the plates was done on their premises. Dinkel's work, known in a few copies only, appeared in eight fascicules, each containing 12 and the last one 16 outline lithographs. Zanna dedicated Dinkel's work to Duke Maximilian of Bavaria (1808-88), father of the famous Empress Sisi. The dedication leaf is known in two versions: the paper embossed with a lozenge-shaped pattern recalling the Bavarian colors (as here) and with coloured lettering but without embossing. - Original wrappers slightly stained near the edges, otherwise a perfect copy from the Library of the Dukes of Bavaria at Tegernsee Castle. {BN#24524}
