EUR 4,000.00

First edition of the frequently reprinted work on number theory (last republished in Florence in 1979), on which the engineer Giuseppe Antonio Alberti's (1715-68) fame rests. The only edition to contain the author's dedication to his friend Domenico Casaglia. "Operetta di qualche interesse, la quale oltre i giuochi numerici contiene ancora dilettevoli giuochi di prestigio" (Riccardi). "Contains arithmetical puzzles, tricks with cards and dice, problems relating to the theory of numbers, sleight of hand, etc." (Honeyman). "Giuseppe Alberti was born in Bologna and made his career as an architect and engineer of roads and canals. In the latter part of his life, he published several books on technical subjects ranging from applied mathematics to civil engineering to fireworks. This particular work on mathematical recreations was quite popular and remained in print for many years after the author’s death. This is the type of book that mischievous uncles like to own. It contains a myriad of mathematical problems, tricks and amusements with which they can both entertain and torment their nephews and nieces while in the process teaching mathematical and manipulative skills. The volume starts out with examples of simple arithmetic problems that have unusual properties (such as all the digits of the answer being identical—see the multiplication example illustration). Problems are solved by proportionality operations—processes usually denoted by the terms rule of three, rule of five, and rule of false position. After the simpler arithmetic problems, Alberti presents a series of puzzles involving magic squares, magic diamonds and other geometric figures. The final half of the book describes how to perform magic tricks ranging from the shell game involving three cups and a pea, through card games, rope tricks and even devices constructed to perform sophisticated sideshow illusions" (Tomash Lib.). - A wide-margined copy, slightly brownstained and wormed throughout. EUR 2,500.00

First edition; rare. "One of his learned obsceneties" (cf. Bilder-Lexikon). Beverland (1650-1716), one of the most colourful figures of late 17th-century scholarship, had to leave Leiden University after creating a scandal hit with his treatise on original sin ("Peccatum originale", 1778). He proceeded to "live in England and write many pieces of filthy poetry" (cf. Rosenkranz, Hdb. einer allg. Geschichte der Poesie II, 30). An English translation was published in 1905 as "The Law Concerning Draped Virginity: An Academical Study". None of his works was banned by the Church, a fact which Reusch (II, 862) interprets as a sign of the increasingly desultory character of Roman censorship in the 18th century. - Front hinge beginning to split, otherwise a very appealing copy from the library of Armand Jules de Rohan (1695-1762), Duke and Archbishop of Reims (and uncle of Cardinal Rohan, notorious for the so-called Affair of the Diamond Necklace), with his engr. armorial bookplate on front pastedown. {BN#29568}

Unique drawings of military formations

[China - Imperial Workshop]. Album showing Chinese military formations ["Five Stars and... the Crescent"]. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850. Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850. Folio (565 x 300 mm). With 9 large double-page hand-painted illustrations. Fan fold binding, crimson silk-covered wooden boards with the manuscript title (gilding faded) on front cover.

EUR 85,000.00

Unique manuscript album in accordion format showing Chinese military formations and drills. "Five Stars and the Crescent" (moon) may refer to a constellation or pattern of stars imitated by a military manoeuvre. The album was produced by court artists of the Imperial Workshop during a time when the Chinese army was facing rapid decline, both in terms of discipline and in terms of competing with Western military techniques. Early during the Taiping Rebellion, Qing forces suffered a series of disastrous defeats culminating in the loss of the regional capital city of Nanjing in 1853. Shortly thereafter, a Taiping expeditionary force penetrated as far north as the suburbs of Tianjin in what was considered the Imperial heartlands. In desperation the Qing court ordered a Chinese mandarin, Zeng Guofan, to organise regional and village militias into a standing army called 'tuanlian' to contain the rebellion. Zeng Guofan's strategy was to rely on local gentries to raise a new type of military organisation from those provinces directly threatened by the Taiping rebels. This force, called the "Xiang Army", was a hybrid of local militia and standing army. In 1860 British and French forces in the Second Opium War captured Beijing and sacked the Summer Palace. The shaken court sought to modernise its military and industrial institutions by buying European technology. - The hand-written brush pen text for each illustration runs vertically to the top right side of each page as follows: "Drum is played on the general's stage and the bugle calls for the standing in line. Each captain of the five posts sees to the straightness of the line. Rules of the running array are followed. No one should talk and all should listen to the order. The line leader leads the mandarin-duck formation and then changes to a straight line". - Some wear to silk and boards, as commensurate with age. Minor repairs. Overall in very good condition. {BN#45553}

EUR 35,000.00

A collection of paintings depicting pornographic scenes of - frequently acrobatic - intercourse (one, a threesome; another involving a "wheelbarrow" game; yet another showing a sex act performed while a baby is sucking the woman's breast). An intriguing and rare example, likely intended for Western consumption. The imaginative erotic scenes are painted on pith paper, or "rice paper", which came from the inner pith of the tree Trexapanx Papyrifera (in Chinese "Tongacao"). Pith paper was introduced in the workshops of Canton in the early 19th century on the instigation of Westerners: its soft, velvety surface was an excellent base for painting in the western way. Erotic pith paper albums were usually of rather low quality, but the present suite, with its rich colours and softly rendered figures, is a fine exception. - Paper sometimes cracked, occasional loss of pigment. EUR 4,500.00

The vivid images depict stages in the Chinese production process for tea, from preparing the ground for planting to packing tea chests for export. These images were produced in large numbers in the port of Canton, China during the second and third quarters of the 19th century. Made primarily for the export trade, they are mostly the work of anonymous artists. Although they may resemble enamel paintings, they are actually watercolours on pith paper. Pith is not manufactured, but derived by cutting the inner spongy tissue of a small tree, Tetrapanax papyriferum, which is indigenous to southern China and Taiwan. Most pith paper watercolours, like these examples, are unsigned, though the majority are known to have been produced in Canton where numerous workshops existed. Individual images were often pasted into 19th and early 20th century Australian scrap albums, but it was common to buy the images in sets of 11 or 12, bound into albums with silk brocade covers. The pith paper was supplied held in place on a backing sheet and usually surrounded by a silk or paper ribbon. - With stamp of the "Pakhuismeesteren van de thee Amsterdam" on front flyleaf. Boards chipped and frayed with some loss to silk covers. Some paintings with some minor cracking. {BN#45811}
